Lone Star College-Kingwoods new self-defense class for women is bringing mothers and daughters together to learn how to protect themselves from potentially dangerous situations. Although the course is designed for all women, age 14 to senior citizens, a number of mother-daughter teams have attended and discovered the experience to be another way to bond. Chris Mandelski, the mother of Cate and Lily, wishes she had taken this course when she was a teen. I hope my girls never need to use these skills, but I know that if they need to protect themselves, they can, she said. Sue Kyme, leader of Girl Scout Troop 9208, brought four of her scouts to the course. This course offers invaluable information and instruction to all women in the community, she said. I believe it is important to raise our daughters awareness to the dangers that are around us on a daily basis and give them the tools to protect themselves. In as few as eight hours, a woman can learn basic self-defense strategies as well as increase her awareness of potentially dangerous and avoidable situations. Dr. Chris Martin, an expert in the martial arts and LSC-Kingwood math professor, instructs the class. Martin also leads discussions about different scenarios that may call for defensive action or flight. He feels that raising awareness of these situations will help women learn how to better prepare for them or to choose alternatives instead. The eight-hour course will meet Mondays and Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. on July 7, 9, 14 and 16 in the Fitness Center dance studio, located on campus at the intersection of Royston Road and Sorters Road. Students may park in the lots adjacent to the tennis courts. Athletic attire is appropriate for the class and tennis shoes are highly recommended. Students are encouraged to bring a bottle of water as well. The cost for the class is $47 with a $20 registration fee. Seniors, age 60 and over, will receive a 20 percent discount on tuition.
