The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many people to find solitary or virtual activities to keep busy, impacting the elderly population.

To address this need, Lone Star College-Kingwood invites adults, age 50 and older, to join the Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL). The program offers many free and low-cost classes and events for retired, semiretired and working seniors. Activities are perfect for those who are seeking new friends or new interests.

“We continue to offer noncredit courses, lectures, and activities that will expand members’ knowledge and develop their social connections,” said Pat Chandler, continuing education director at LSC-Kingwood and ALL program manager for LSC.

Attendees can learn more about the offerings at the ALL Open House Friday, Jan. 14, from 1-3 p.m. in the Administration and Performing Arts (APA) Center Atrium. Dr. Melissa Gonzalez, campus president, will address attendees in the APA Main Stage Theatre. This event will cover enrollment, membership dues and upcoming classes. Additionally, instructors will have tables at the event to provide more information on their courses.

“We moved the program from the East Montgomery County Improvement District to the main campus in Kingwood. This transition provides members with a larger community and greater opportunities for learning and networking with peers,” Chandler said. “We will also offer virtual and face-to-face classes.”

LSC-Kingwood ALL offers more than 100 classes each semester. In spring 2022, courses will cover a variety of interests in computer and technology, culture, fitness and health, games, gardening, history, movies, music, theater, politics, reading, safety, science and nature, senior issues and much more.

“Thanks to everyone for their efforts, particularly for keeping ALL alive during these difficult times. Again, I have enjoyed the classes and appreciate the new knowledge I have gained,” said Dennis Schaffer, an ALL member.

Annual membership (Sept. 1-Aug. 31) is $25 for access to classes at all seven LSC campuses. Although most courses are free, some may require a small event fee for supplies or entrance. There are no educational requirements.
