Lone Star College-Kingwood offers many Continuing Education (CE) health care programs that lead to a certificate and assist students in obtaining lucrative jobs or advancing in their current careers.
“We want to be your next step toward an exciting career. Most continuing education classes require no college application or prior testing,” said Pat Chandler, director of continuing education at LSC-Kingwood.
CE programs are available throughout the year. Courses are affordable, accessible and some only take six months to complete. Below are three programs that are open at LSC-Kingwood.
Certified Nurse Aide (CNA):
Overview: Learn the skills, knowledge and abilities essential to providing basic care to residents in long-term care facilities.
Skills learned: answer call signals, feed or assist patients in eating or drinking, provide physical support for daily living activities, document issues to nurses, review dietary restrictions and observe or examine patients for various symptoms.
Course length: 16-20 weeks
Tuition: $1,542 (books and supplies not included)
Employment opportunities: nursing and residential care facilities
Exam: Texas Department of Health and Human Services State Examination.
Clinical Medical Assistant:
Overview: Learn how to perform various clinical and administrative functions and prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations.
Skills learned: schedule appointments, maintain medical records, interview patients, measure vital signs, administer injections and utilize equipment for diagnostic tests.
Course length: five months
Tuition: $3,511 (books and supplies not included)
Employment opportunities: doctors’ offices, clinics, outpatient care centers and hospitals
Exam: eligible to apply for American Association of Medical Assistants, Registered Medical Assistant and National Center for Competency Testing.
Medical Billing and Coding:
Overview: Prepares students to become medical coding professionals
Skills learned: legal, ethical and regulatory concepts, phases of revenue cycle, common medical terminology and disorders and medical procedures common to each body system.
Course length: eight months
Tuition: $3,640 (books and supplies not included)
Employment opportunities: hospitals, doctors’ offices, clinics, insurance companies and ambulatory facilities
Exam: eligible to take Certified Coding Associate, Certified Coding Specialist and Certified Professional Coder.
