The ESOL Program at LSC-Kingwood offers courses to help students learn or improve their English skills.

Imagine emigrating to a new country without knowing the language. This challenge can impact a person's career, education and social opportunities.

"Educational programs, such as ESOL, can help immigrants learn or improve their English skills," said Daniel Tatarzyn, ESOL lead faculty at Lone Star College (LSC)-Kingwood. "These courses will help them achieve their goals of pursuing a college degree, improving their job opportunities, communicating more easily, or just being able to help their children with homework."

At LSC-Kingwood, the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program offers a wide variety of classes for non-native English speakers to improve their ability to communicate effectively. The non-credit program provides courses in grammar, listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing in five skill levels from beginning to advanced.

"After I moved to the United States from Ukraine, I quickly realized that my electronic dictionary was not enough. If I wanted to continue my career, I knew that I had to speak professional English," said Nina Nichols, former ESOL student and current business manager at LSC-Kingwood. "When I enrolled in the ESOL program, my English was at zero. After completion, I was able to speak, read and write. I gained the confidence to achieve my goals."

The ESOL program at LSC-Kingwood offers small class sizes to allow individual attention from highly qualified instructors. The faculty uses the latest teaching methods and students have access to state-of-the-art technology, resources and online services to ensure their success. Depending on their enrollment, students can earn either non-transferable credits or continuing education units.

"The ESOL program gave me a good solid base for my writing, communication and reading skills. These classes helped me fulfill my dream of completing my associate degree in graphic design," said Angela Reyna, former student and current staff assistant at LSC-Kingwood. "I received help from tutors, the library staff, career services and I attended a variety of campus events. This has been a great learning experience with a lot of commitment and time invested."

Students who complete ESOL courses can move into academic studies at LSC-Kingwood, apply for admission to other colleges or universities, or use their enhanced English language skills in their work or daily lives.
