Cellphones are quickly becoming the camera of choice when people want to capture and share special moments with family and friends.
This evolution inspired the theme of Lone Star College-Kingwood’s first spring art exhibition, “2020/Vision Juried Cellphone Photography Show.” The show will run Feb. 17-April 2 in the Fine Arts Gallery located in the Administration and Performing Arts Center. The submission deadline is Jan. 15, and there is a $10 flat entry fee. Upload all entries to tinyurl.com/2020LSC.
“Cellphone capabilities and the prevalence of social media have given rise to the mobile device as a preferred mode for photography because of its convenience and the device’s connection to all of our favorite apps,” said Taylor Anderson, exhibition co-curator and graphic designer at LSC-Kingwood. “This dynamic has changed how photography looks in modern times – breathtaking imagery, no longer reserved for professional photographers, can now be created by your grandparents, your mailman, or you.”
The “2020/Vision Juried Cellphone Photography Show” will feature images and videos taken by professional and first-time artists around the greater Houston area. Judge Allison Hunter, the humanities artist-in-residence at Rice University, will assess all entries and select the first, second, and third place winners during the Reception and Awards Ceremony on Feb. 27 at 1:30-3 p.m. An evening reception will take place on Feb. 28 from 6-8 p.m. Both events will be in the Fine Arts Gallery.
“This exhibition aims to celebrate this innovation of the modern-day by showing the works of fine artists alongside emerging talent, or perhaps someone who just took a really great picture,” Anderson said.
Participants, 18-years-old or older, can enter up to five photographs and/or video pieces (60 seconds or shorter). Also, photos and videos must be either a portrait/landscape format (16:9 or 9:16 aspect ratio) or square format (1:1). Entries must have been photographed or recorded using a mobile device (cellphone or tablet) and edited via cellphone-based apps. Upload submissions to tinyurl.com/2020LSC.
