HOUSTON (July 20, 2017) –Opera and music enthusiasts are invited to the Kingwood Summer Opera Concert on Aug. 12.

“Pirates, Poets, and Potions” is a presentation of opera and operetta performances by Lone Star College-Kingwood’s music students. The show will take place at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on the college’s Main Stage in the Performing Arts Center.

“Students will perform their musical pieces using the opera production skills they learned in the Summer II Workshop course. Those skills include musical style, vocal technique, stage movement, costuming, stage makeup, and the many aspects of the theatrical art,” said Dr. Robert Hunt, music faculty and opera workshop director.

Repertoire will include excerpts from such masterpieces as Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore” (Elixir of Love), Pergolesi’s “La serva padrona”, Purcell’s “The Fairy-Queen”, Mark Adamo’s “Little Women”, Monteverdi’s “L’incoronatione di Poppea”, Britten’s “Albert Herring”, and Menotti’s “The Consul”. Scenes from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance” and “Patience”, and by Bernstein’s “Candide”, will represent light opera.

LSC-Kingwood music students who will perform are Jacelle Gardner, Rito Mayoral, Zac Salazar, Avery Simmons, Lauren Gusman, Michelle Villa, Jack Balog, Rhiannon O’Brien, Matthew Mitchell, Darby Hindmon, Benjamin Calip, Steve Buza, Sean Mullinix, Alexandra Garcia, Katelynn Bauer, Christopher Love, Victoria Love, Victoria Godsby, Lisa Worthen, Melissa Rush, Amanda Merrick, and Micaela Munoz. Hector Benavides will be the percussionist; theatre department faculty Kali Vlahos will serve as technical director and Eric Skiles as costumer; and Dr. Marion Russell Dickson is the guest stage director for the production.
