The last week of February will be filled with scheduled events for students and faculty of Lone Star College-Kingwood. This will be the 10th year the college has participated in the United Way campaign. Campaign coordinator John Turner hopes to beat last year’s earnings and has set a goal of $10,000. “We’ve never set a hard goal, but since we’ve hovered around the $9,000 mark the last couple of years, I would personally like to raise $10,000,” said Turner. The United Way Campaign week will begin on Monday, Feb. 25, with an opening ceremony in the Courtyard and end Friday, Feb. 29, with a closing ceremony also in the Courtyard. Events throughout the week include bake sales, silent auctions, administration gladiator competitions and Student Appreciation Day, taking place that Tuesday. “Student Appreciation Day is an event we started my first year working with United Way,” said Turner. “My primary goal is to raise awareness of services that may be useful to our students such as the American Red Cross, Family Service Center, Montgomery County Woman’s Center and YMCA. These groups not only provide social services to our student population, but also offer our students the opportunity for volunteerism and civic engagement.” Student Appreciation Day gives students the opportunity to help out by purchasing T-shirts or donating money while listening to live music, playing games and enjoying free food. The theme is sports-related to match the slogan: “All Star” College-Kingwood teams with United Way. “In an effort to get our college administrators involved, we’ve created the Administration Gladiators competition, which is kind of like a set of field day events for our president, vice presidents, deans and directors,” said Turner. “It should be lots of fun for our students to see.” For more information, e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots.
