Danell’s Gifts and Flowers, in Humble, has been named one of the 2010 Small Business of the Year by Lone Star College System’s Small Business Development Center Advisory Council. “I feel very honored to even be in the category with all of the other people, much less win,” said Danell Fields, owner of Danell’s Gifts and Flowers. “I was thrilled to be a finalist, actually. I’m also proud for all of my employees. We’ve worked really hard over the years. It’s fun to see this come to fruition.” The winners were honored Nov. 18 at the SBDC Advisory Council’s 24th annual Small Business of the Year Awards Banquet held at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott. Businesses were chosen based on leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, business growth and contribution to the community. Danell’s Gifts and Flowers has been in business for 10 years, since she responded to what she felt was a need in the community. Fields saw an opportunity while working at Rosewood Funeral Home, the family’s business. “I felt like when families came in [to the funeral home], they needed a person to come in and help them with their need for flowers for the funeral service,” said Fields. “I thought to myself, ‘I can do that.’ I researched it a little bit and jumped in feet first.” Fields opened a shop across the street from Rosewood Funeral Home. She now includes wedding and event floral arrangements in her repertoire. Fields also recently installed a 16-door electric flower kiosk at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Patrons are able to purchase flowers 24-hours a day in the lobby of the hospital. “This has been a wonderful venue for me,” she said. “Flowers have always been a big part of my life. It’s been an evolving thing of hard work and just enjoying what we do. It’s been great.” Fields is active in the community, and volunteers with a variety of charities and organizations throughout the Lake Houston area. “I feel that a big part of working is also giving,” said Fields. “I feel very honored to be able to help the community in different ways.” In 2009, Fields was named YMCA volunteer of the year. Currently, she is a member of the Humble ISD Education Foundation board of directors. She has also volunteered with Lake Houston ISD, the Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce, Lake Houston Family YMCA, East Montgomery County YMCA extension, the Kingwood Chamber of Commerce, the American Heart Association, FamilyTime Crisis and Counseling Center, Village Learning & Achievement Center and Kingwood Area Republican Women. Other business honorees include: Charlie Fogarty of Steamboat House Restaurant, Bruce Tough of Tough Law Firm, Carol Fellbaum of A Dog’s Life Pet Salon and Boutique, and Leonard Courtright of Allied Siding and Windows. Danell’s Gifts And Floral is located at 2607 Old Humble Rd, Humble, Texas 77396 across from Rosewood Funeral Home. For more information, contact (281) 441-1126.
