– Register by Sept. 20 – Atascocita Branch Library is offering two volunteer opportunities for teens this fall. The program is open to all teens ages 13-18 from any school district. According to Darla Pruitt, circulation assistant for the Atascocita Branch Library, the volunteer program is good for students who need volunteer hours for school or who want their college applications to stand out. VolunTeens is a semester-long volunteer program where students help by making sure everything is shelved properly and perform a variety of other tasks for the library for two hours a week. VolunTeens will also prepare craft starter kits to be used for the younger children’s program. “The summer is wild for us,” said Pruitt. “We get the teens to go through and make sure everything is in order for us.” Another volunteer opportunity, The Board of Library Teens (BOLT), runs October 2010 through September 2011. This program allows students to voice their opinion on the services that the library offers, including developing library programs for teens. BOLT members will volunteer for approximately 20-40 hours per semester. This is the first year that the Atascocita Branch Library has offered the BOLT program. “The volunteers wanted more hours and more projects,” said Pruitt. “They wanted to make more decisions. This is more of a leadership role.” BOLT members also work with the collection development of the library. According to Pruitt, members give their “input on what they think we need more of.” “It gives them a chance to get their voice heard,” added Pruitt. BOLT members are currently raising funds for furniture for the teen area at the library. Whatever they raise, the Friends of the Atascocita Library (FOAL) will match. Pruitt pointed out that money for the library programs come from FOAL, not Harris County. “That’s why the book sales are so important,” Pruitt said. “We love our FOAL members. They provide all this great stuff to us.” “We appreciate all of our volunteers, both teens and adults,” said Pruitt. “We need all the help we can get.”The deadline to register for VolunTeens is Monday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Sept. 18 for BOLT. A mandatory orientation for VolunTeens is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. Applications are available at the front desk at Atascocita Branch Library. The library is located at 19520 Pinehurst Trail Drive in Atascocita.
