At the State Republican Convention in Dallas in June, three members of Kingwood Area Republican Women were honored for distinguishing themselves by exceptional volunteer service in positions of increasing responsibility within KARW, the Texas Federation of Republican Women, the National Federation of Republican Women, and the Republican Party of Texas. Their outstanding dedication and commitment reflects distinct credit upon them, KARW, and the Texas Federation of Republican Women. Honorees were Mary Blanchard, Charlotte Henderson, and Miek Staats. All have been active members of KARW for many years and have records of exemplary service to the GOP as well as to the local club. Since 1980, Mary Blanchard has been an active member of Kingwood Area Republican Women. She has served as President, Parliamentarian, Legislative Chairman, Bylaws Chairman, Nominating Committee, Fundraising and Telephone Committee Chairman. For many years, Mary worked as a clerk at the polls on Election Day. She attended the NFRW Convention in Albuquerque, N.M., TFRW Conventions in Houston, Corpus Christi and El Paso and the State GOP Convention in Dallas. She walked door to door for Congressman Jack Fields, Congressman Kevin Brady, Congressman Ted Poe, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, State Representative (now County Judge) Ed Emmett, Governor Clements, Commissioner Jerry Eversole, President George H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush. Mary was a Yellow Rose recipient. A life long Republican, in her first National Election, Mary voted for Barry Goldwater. Charlotte Henderson is the epitome of a Republican Woman. She became a member of Kingwood Area Republican Women in the late 1980’s and has served in numerous positions on the board including presiding as President for two years. Charlotte also served as Public Relations Chairman and Ways and Means Chairman. She attended the Inauguration of President Reagan in 1981 and has treasured memories and signed photographs that are envied by many. She proudly displays a football signed and presented to her by Congressman Jack Kemp. Another treasure honoring her accomplishments is the Republican Presidential Legion of Merit Presidential Honor Roll Award signed by Presidents George H. W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford. Charlotte’s collection of 24 Republican Presidential Buttons 1896-1988 is proudly displayed in her apartment. In 1993, Charlotte was honored as a Yellow Rose of Texas. She has been a resource and consultant for many hopeful politicians. Although in declining health, Charlotte continues to be a role-model because of her ongoing support for the GOP and candidates she considers worthy of endorsement. Charlotte was able to attend KARW’s 30th Anniversary Celebration in September 2009 where she was warmly greeted by many Republican officials. In 1958, Miek Staats arrived by boat from the Netherlands to Houston, Texas. She and her family became American Citizens in 1964. To be a better informed voter, she joined Kingwood Area Republican Women in 1984. Her life is commendable for a Republican woman and for her many years as a member of KARW. Miek has served as chairman of Hospitality, Telephone-Hotline, Ways and Means, Convention and Awards and the Nominating Committee. In addition, she worked on many social events, fund raisers and held numerous meetings at her home. Miek has walked miles, knocking on doors as well as calling for hours for Congressman Jack Fields, Congressman Kevin Brady, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, County Judge Ed Emmett, State Senator Tommy Williams and State Representative Candidate Dan Huberty. Miek has attended Precinct Conventions, TFRW Conventions, State GOP Conventions and Legislative Day in Austin. A very, very proud American, she has never failed to vote. The next meeting of KARW will be on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. at Kingwood Country Club with Congressman Ted Poe as speaker, and Blue Star Moms will be recognized. An optional buffet will be available for $17. Reservations for dinner are necessary; contact Wendy by noon on Monday, Sept. 6, at 281-359-3557. KARW has been presenting politically interesting programs for the area since their inception in 1979. They are an award-winning club at the State and National level.
