Grand opening event huge success The Durdin family-owned Parkway Family Mazda/Kia dealership in Kingwood was the place to be last Friday evening. The grand opening event was the Durdin family’s way to support the local community, by making the evening a benefit for the FamilyTime Crisis and Counseling Center in Humble. FamilyTime Crisis and Counseling Center provides an outreach program and access to services for families and individuals in crisis. This includes counseling and support groups for victims of abuse, a 24-hour crisis hotline, an emergency shelter for battered women and children called “The Door,” hospital accompaniment for sexual assault victims, trained staff to provide legal advocacy, professional counseling at low costs, parenting education and anger management classes. FamilyTime Executive Director Judy Cox was thrilled to have the opportunity. “For somebody so new in the community to pull this together so fast, it’s just remarkable,” she said. “The Durdin’s are an extremely community-minded family.” This is not a first for the Durdins. They also own a dealership in Tomball, and it is the site of an annual charity event benefiting that community as well. The evening included a live and silent auction, with items including jewelry, art, autographed sports memorabilia, and luxury vacations. Guests enjoyed wine, rack of lamb, beef tenderloin, a chocolate fountain and live music to round out the evening. All proceeds from the event go to FamilyTime. General Manager Granger Durdin believes that giving back to the community is a priority. “That’s always been the key to our success,” she said. “It’s our business model. We are family owned and operated, and we get involved in the community, and we give back to the community.” Commenting on the selection of FamilyTime as the featured charity for this event, Durdin explained that “we are a predominantly women-owned business – so this really hits home.” Cox was extremely appreciative. “The economy has hit us hard – as with all nonprofits,” she said. “We really just want to thank the Durdins for what they have done.” The Durdin family includes six children; three work in the family business. The family also owns an insurance company in the area, Parkway Family Insurance. Parkway Family Mazda/KIA is located at 22565 U.S. Highway 59 in Kingwood.
