A beautiful new meetinghouse was unveiled in Eagle Springs recently at an open house for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Houston Texas East Stake. The building, which broke ground in February 2009, started occupying in March of this year, and was paid for entirely in advance through tithing; it is located at 12521 Will Clayton Parkway in Humble. The building was designed and landscaped to blend in with the architectural style and heavily wooded look of the community. It is built to hold a congregation of approximately 300-500 individuals. Gary Chapman, bishop of the Eagle Springs congregation, believes this is the ideal size. “It's small enough for a feeling of family and community,” he said. Family is definitely the main focus of the church, as during the open house tour guests were ushered through several rooms with specific purposes for worship, study and/or fellowship. The common theme was an emphasis on the family as a priority. Meeting rooms are available for young men and women, family history, priesthood meetings, Sunday school, women's groups, a nursery and more. There is also a multi-purpose gym, kitchen and worship chapel. The Relief Society for Women is the main women's group, and with six million members worldwide, it is the largest women's society in the world. Their three focus areas are service, education and enrichment. Service and education both exist for the women to give back to the community and world, and the enrichment focus is about homemaking and strengthening the family. The overall care and function of the church is a congregation-wide effort; it is considered a lay ministry, and everyone plays a part in participation for the ongoing activities. The members of the congregation take turns with the cleaning and general care of the church, for example. The building was planned in order to accommodate the increasing population of the Eagle Springs area, and it is the first new building for the east side in 25 years. Eva Armendariz, Director of Media Relations for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Houston Texas East Stake, said that because of the rapid growth in the area, the hope was to break ground on another new church building in Summerwood sometime in the near future.
