Senior quarterback Randall Graves threw for 251 yards and four touchdowns to four different receivers to lead the Kingwood Mustangs to its first District 16-6A victory, a 41-29 triumph over Conroe on Saturday at Turner Stadium. The Mustangs (2-5, 1-2) look to make it two in a row when they play visitors to rivals Atascocita (7-1, 3-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Turner Stadium. Graves completed 12-of-21 passes, including a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown tosses that extended Kingwood's 27-23 lead. Graves threw 20 yards to Josh Gere in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter for one score, and then hit Daniel Gionnavola with a 14-yard touchdown pass midway through the final period. Graves completed passes to seven different receivers. Dalton Dvorak led that group with four catches for 72 yards. The Mustangs rallied from an early 9-3 deficit when Graves connected with Blake Gould on a 46-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter. It started a 17-point swing for Kingwood, which led 27-17 at halftime. Junior running back Griffin Lay completed that surge with a 7-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter. Lay paced Kingwood's rushing attack with 105 yards on 11 carries. He also hauled in a 46-yard touchdown pass from Graves just before intermission. Kingwood churned out 217 yards on the ground. Damon Young accounted for 65 of those on 19 rushing attempts. Kicker Diego Garcia got the Mustangs on the scoreboard initially with a 34-yard field at the 6:45 mark of the first quarter. He also added a 27-yard field goal in the opening minute of the second quarter. Garcia made good on all five PAT attempts. His first one broke a 9-9 tie, giving Kingwood a lead it never relinquished.
