The Kingwood Medical Center celebrated the grand opening of its new $80 million Women and Children's Center April 29. According to hospital officials, the three-story, 155,400 square-foot expansion will provide a modern healing environment to patients from Northeast Harris, East Montgomery, San Jacinto and Liberty counties. "Our top priority is to deliver high-quality, cost-effective health care to the communities we serve,” said Melinda Stephenson, CEO of the hospital. "These enhancements allow our medical staff and team of employees to continue providing the safest and most expedited care for women and children in our community.” The first floor of the new wing includes labor and delivery suites, suites for high-risk antepartum patients, as well as a neonatal intensive care unit. The second floor contains postpartum suites and a nursery. The third floor, which is slated to open this summer, will house pediatric, medical and surgical units. "Our team delivered more than 2,500 babies into the world last year,” said Cami Rose, director of Women's Services. "The newly expanded newborn nursery will provide the best in aesthetics and comfort for our newborn parents, as well as offer our physicians and staff the most modern, efficient, state-of-the-art work environments,” said Rose. In addition to the new wing, the project also features renovations to other areas of the hospital, including the relocation and expansion of admitting and administration departments, the development of a corridor connecting the north and south towers, the expansion and remodeling of the cafeteria and the development of a new central energy plant. About 185 parking spaces will also be added on the campus. According to the medial center's marketing coordinator, Cristina Alig, the hospital currently employs more than 1,300 local residents. Alig said the hospital is anticipating additional jobs in clinical and ancillary services as a result of the expansion. For more information, visit kingwoodmedical.com.
