Community supporters are showing their love for The Society of St. Stephen Annual Ladies Doubles Charity Tennis Tournament to be held Thursday, May 8, at the Clubs of Kingwood Tennis Center. Tournament chairs are Jim and Diana Rutherford. Last year the tournament raised more than $62,000 for the Society, which is a 100 percent volunteer-based, community outreach ministry of Kingwood United Methodist Church (KUMC) providing free food and clothing to more than 400 needy families in the area every month. Clubs of Kingwood is donating the tournament grand prize a Spa Day for Four at Kingwood Country Club Spa. Opportunities for sponsorship are still available at the following levels: Silver$100, Gold$300, Platinum$500 and Diamond$1000. There is also the opportunity to donate items for door prizes and a raffle. Sponsors will receive recognition in all publicity and on special signage at the event. Door prizes and raffle items are solicited as well. Sharon Lewis, owner of Kingwood Travel, has donated several wonderful trips including to Occidental Grand Aruba Resort in Aruba, Me by Melia Contemporary Resort in Cabo San Lucas and a stay at the Magnolia, a boutique hotel. Society of St. Stephen Director Lynn Harper said, There are so many people right now who are really struggling with the loss of a job, family illness or other financial setback that need just a little help until they can get back on their feet again. These are our neighbors. This tournament is a wonderful, fun event that enables us to help many more needy families in our area. Ladies who are interested in participating in the tournament may begin signing up April 8 at the Kingwood Country Club Tennis Pro Shop at 9 a.m. The cost to participate is $50 per player, which includes lunch. The format for the tournament is all levels ladies doubles. The tournament is open to all area women and it is not necessary to be a club member to participate. Everyone is welcome. The tournament will begin at 8:45 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. Society has three special giving events each year. The Back to School Program supplies more than 950 children with school supplies, a $15 shoe voucher for one pair of new shoes and new backpacks every other year. For Thanksgiving they provide more than 450 food baskets for a family holiday dinner and for Christmas, gifts for children ages 1-17.
