Staff and volunteers look forward to creating an outdoor classroom Huffman Intermediate School announces the official groundbreaking ceremony of the HIS/CES Community Gardens will take place Feb. 19 at the HIS campus. The Garden Committee plans to break ground on Phase I of the four phase project in early spring 2014. The HIS/CES Community Gardens goal is to create a campus with a fully-realized outdoor environmental plan over a five year period. Due to the Huffman Intermediate School and Copeland Elementary School campuses being merged into one large campus, there are many unused outdoor spaces that can be adapted for student education. During Phase I, the garden committee will develop an underutilized fenced green courtyard into 8 raised harvest beds, a composting and rain collection area, and a picnic area for outdoor learning. Mr. Jim Dees, HISD Science Coordinator and one of the Garden Committee Leads, states, "It has been a dream of mine to build an outdoor learning area on this campus for 13 years. This dream goes back to when this building was Huffman Middle School and I was a classroom teacher. I am thankful that our campus and district administrators as well as our maintenance and operations staff are willing to work with us to make this dream a reality." The Garden Committee is seeking sponsors from local businesses and residents to promote community involvement; items needed include bricks and pavers left over from home building projects to create garden paths. The committee also welcomes donations of mulch, garden soil, seeds, and plants from those who would like to be a part of this garden project. We also invite volunteers who would like donate time and energy to make this Community Garden a success for our children and community.
