Cutline: Blanca Alvarado is holding her bag of fresh produce from North Pole at North Belt Math and Literacy Night. The Houston Food Bank generously donated a truck full of fruits and vegetables to North Belt Elementary School. Families that attended the schools North Pole at North Belt Math and Literacy Night were able to take home as many produce items as they wanted. Literacy Night is a school-wide event to promote literacy. Volunteers included Summer Creek High School Key Club, Quest High School students and Journey of Faith United Methodist. Parents were also able to sign up for food stamps and Medicaid. With more than 700 people in attendance, the food truck was left empty by the end of the night. North Belt Elementary has recently paired up with the Houston Food Bank for the Backpack Buddy program where children are able to take home donated non-perishable food items each weekend in a backpack. Students bring back the backpacks on Monday and the backpacks are stored and prepared for the next Friday. The school is hoping to have the food bank truck again in the spring at another school-wide event.
