Date set for 27th annual Nutcracker Ballet
- Written by Cheryl Donatto
Kingwood Dance Theatre will present the Nutcracker Ballet, a familiar holiday favorite, in the Atascocita High School Theatre on Dec. 7-8. For the past 27 years, the full-length production, with extensive sets and costumes, has brought the story of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince to life. A cast of more than 100 dancers and performers fill the stage with mice and soldiers, gingerbread children, waltzing flowers, Spanish, Arabian, Chinese and Russian dances, mechanical dolls, snowflakes, the Snow Queen and Sugar Plum Fairy. A gliding sleigh, magical trunk, and falling snow add to the enchantment of the ballet, set to the well known music of Peter Tchaikovsky. This year, the production will feature Lauren Peterson and Genevieve Coovrey sharing the Sugar Plum Fairy role and guest artist, Andre Pridhodko, as Prince. Peterson will dance the role in the Saturday matinee and Saturday evening performances and Coovrey in the Sunday matinee and evening performances. Lauren Monteleone will perform as the Snow Queen. All three ladies are senior dancers with Kingwood Dance Theatre. Other featured dancers include Cecelia Spear and Savannah Smith in the Dew Drop role. Rebecca Braden and Keira King will share the Clara roll. Alexandra Lance and Catherine Cummings will dance as the Magic Trunk Dolls. Kingwood Dance Theatre’s performances are Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 8, at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Reserve seating tickets are $20 and are on sale at the Rowland/Ballard School, 1320 Kingwood Drive, and will also be sold at the theatre box office during the performances starting an hour before curtain. The theatre seating chart can be viewed on line at KingwoodDanceTheatre.com and tickets can be ordered on line and by telephone. Area Girl and Boy scouts may be interested in the badge-earning program, which includes a tour backstage after the performances. Atascocita High School is located at 13300 Will Clayton Parkway. Kingwood Dance Theatre is a nonprofit, public supported organization under the artistic direction of Sheryl Rowland. For more information or to order tickets, call 281-358-4616.
