One of the area’s most far-reaching businesses is located just on the north end of Kingwood. Scapes Environmental Design is a highly successful landscaping and lawn maintenance company that performs a wide variety of services to a large clientele. “Every job I’ve had has kind of lead me back to landscaping,” said owner Jason Core. “I tried working in a restaurant and wound up arranging the flower pots out front and the owner wound up asking me if I would come do that at his house. When I was in the Marine Corps, I took over a maintenance operation from a man two ranks above me because I knew what I was doing. Eventually I decided that this is what I was meant to do.” Core founded Scapes in 2000 after a career of various landscaping jobs. Core spent time at several landscaping companies across the Houston area, and spent much time personally handling land maintenance at homes around Kingwood, before he decided to set up his own business. His company adopted the slogan, “If it’s outdoors, we’ll do it,” and ran with it. This has led to what is probably the biggest facet of Scapes’s success, its wide variety of services. “We’ve done everything from grandma’s garden to five-level water features,” said Core. Although it focuses mostly on the landscaping and lawn care aspects of the business, Scapes has a history of working any landscaping or construction project for the right price, from simple mowing or watering jobs to ones as extravagant as constructing full-yard walkways and patios or backyard waterfalls. Scapes serves all over the Lake Houston area, and even receive business in Texas as far as Galveston, Austin and Dallas. “We realize we’re not the cheapest company out there,” said office manager Rachel Sullivan. “But we’re not overpriced. We’re not expensive on purpose. You’re definitely getting what you pay for, we definitely take care of our customers.” For more information and photos of completed projects, visit Photo: Scapes Environmental Design is one of the Lake Houston area’s most successful local businesses.
