On May 14, The Clubs of Kingwood hosted the 5th Annual Ladies Tennis tournament, with 100 ladies playing tennis, having lunch and bidding on more than 70 raffle and silent auction items, all to benefit Society of St. Stephen’s (SOSS) Back to School Supplies program for community neighbors-in-need. “Despite a sluggish economy, our community continues to give outstanding support for neighbors-in-need,” commented SOSS event chair Diana Rutherford. This year’s lady tennis event held at Kingwood Tennis Center generated more than $58,000, which will provide backpacks, shoe vouchers and school supplies to more than 900 area students. Over the past 5 years, the event has generated more than $200,000 toward school supplies and has been faithfully supported by many local businesses, such as Alspaugh’s Ace Hardware, Kingwood Travel and Insperity. New small businesses such as Papa Murphy’s Pizza, Chick-fil-A and Nothing Bundt Cakes became new donors. Additionally, local service organizations such as Kingwood Women’s Club, National Charity League, Humble and Kingwood Rotary clubs, ExxonMobil and Kiwanis have been longtime supporters of SOSS providing volunteer hours.
