The Summer Creek High School journalism program received 17 state honors, including first place in Feature Writing, In-Depth News/Feature Package and Computer Art, at the Interscholastic League Press Conference spring convention in Austin this weekend. Thirteen students won state honors for their work in the monthly newspaper that is printed in full color each month and handed out to all 2,200 students on campus. Seniors Krysten Barnes, Lisseth Lopez, Alex Pelham, Krislyn Domingue, Madison Rice, Rikki Hurt and Meredith Mann were all honored for either their writing, photography or design that appeared in the magazine. Underclassmen who also received medals for their outstanding work included Madison Terrier, Victoria Valentine, Jenna Duvall, Alexis Robinson, Allie Stanfield and Jazmyn Griffin. The monthly newspaper also received a Silver Star rating by the ILPC for its "superior" work. Only a handful of newspapers in Texas receive the prestigious star ratings each year at the convention held on the University of Texas campus. The latest state awards capped off a successful year in which Michelle Garcia, Madison Rice, Lisseth Lopez and Rikki Hurt also earned national recognition for their work on the newspaper by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Stories by Madison Terrier, Starr Jauregui and Lisseth Lopez also earned the students prestigious Gold Keys from Quill and Scroll, the national honor society for high school journalists. The program, run by journalism adviser Megan Ortiz, is in its fourth year. This year, the school will have its first journalism representative at State in UIL. Junior Madison Terrier will compete May 21 at the state meet in both feature and news writing. Terrier is in her second year as co-Editor-In-Chief of the monthly newspaper. Past digital issues of the award-winning newspaper can be found online at, along with a number of additional stories and videos by staff members. The final issue of the Odyssey will be distributed May 17.
