Kingwood Medical Center has brought High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) as a treatment option for ablating prostate tissue in men with localized prostate cancer in the Houston area.
The ultrasound is an outpatient procedure for killing prostate tissue in patients with localized prostate cancer. The technology has less risk of side effects than surgery or radiation.
The technology uses focused ultrasound energy to rapidly heat and destroy tissue in the prostate. It is an accurate and precise procedure that eliminates prostatic tissue without damaging areas around the prostate. This greatly reduces the risk of side effects such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
Urologist Cordell Nwokeji treated the first patients at Kingwood Medical Center earlier this month. “I have been treating men with HIFU for more than 10 years because it is the only treatment that has the ability to appropriately contour to the gland as well as detect and avoid the neurovascular bundles which gives my patients a greater chance of preserved erectile function and prevention of urinary incontinence,” said Nwokeji. “In addition to treating patients, I have been training other doctors for the past two years. The number of hospitals and medical centers that offer HIFU in the U.S. continues to grow, which clearly exhibits the increasing adoption of HIFU as a treatment option for killing prostate tissue in men with localized prostate cancer. I am very happy to bring this technology to Kingwood Medical Center.”
As a one-time, outpatient procedure, the ultrasound allows patients to return home the same day as their procedure and return to their normal lifestyle within a few days. If necessary, the ultrasound may be repeated and can be used to treat patients that have failed radiation therapy. It does not preclude any future treatments, including surgery or radiation.
