In partnership with YMCA of the USA, NBA and Under Amour, the Lake Houston Family YMCA unveiled pavilion restoration improvements at a special ceremony Sept. 6. This refurbishment included new hoops, new paint, backboards, lighting and new logos. The new courts offer young athletes and youth in the community with access to engage in recreational activities, basketball, games they love and enable opportunities to maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay active. This refurbished facility “will continue to provide our community with YMCA programs and activities. For instance, our 21st annual Bridge Fest 5k will be on Feb. 2, 2013 where we once again expect over 3,000 to participate,” said Carol Sutton, Community Liaison for Lake Houston Family YMCA. The official ribbon cutting ceremony included remarks by NBA legend, John Lucas of the Houston Rockets, Mike Sullivan, Houston City Council Member for District E, Mike Parker, Brand Director of Basketball of Under Armour, as well as officials from the community and YMCA. Through this restoration YMCA can continue to “strengthen the community by providing programs, that nurtures hundred of children and teen through youth activities and sports to improve health leadership and self confidence,” stated Jenna Dhayer, Community Executive Director. With the refurbished YMCA pavilion, Kingwood and surrounding areas youth can engage in fun physical activity on a safe court. “I played basketball growing up; it is great to be able to give youth the chance to have access to reliable, sturdy, nice courts to play on, all the time. We are happy to be able to give this to the YMCA,” said Kara Stetler, Marketing Specialist for NBA Entertainment. After the ribbon cutting ceremony, YMCA kids received the chance to play a game of one on one with NBA legend John Lucas on the new court. “This new facility gives a place for kids to play, encourages fitness, basketball and a place to gather,” said Mike Parker, Brand Director of Basketball for Under Armour. Upcoming in the fall, the Lake Houston Family YMCA offers an array of programs for youth and families. With the refurbishment of the YMCA pavilion it, “has an increased opportunity for youth in the community to maintain great fitness, healthy lifestyle and outside activity,” said Allen Bidwell, parent at the Lake Houston Family YMCA. The original building was built in 2001 and will continue to “promote fitness in youth” stated Laura Perez, parent at the Lake Houston Family YMCA. “As parents we really appreciate a safe and fun environment for our kids. It encourages our kids to play more outdoor activities and to stay active,” stated Laura Perez. In addition to this court, YMCA of the USA, NBA and Under Armour has restored basketball courts in additional cities- Charlotte, NC, Gardena, CA and Baltimore, MD. Next stop will be New Mark, NJ.
