Community offers many opportunities to honor veterans There are so many ways to honor the nation’s heroes for Veteran’s Day. Below is a list of the many opportunities the community offers to give thanks and recognition to those who have served. May Community Center The May Community Center is having a Thanksgiving Luncheon and Veterans Recognition on Friday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. to honor the men and women that served in the armed forces. Humble High School HHS will present their Wildcat Salute to Veterans 2009 on Nov. 10. The salute will start with a ceremony at 7:40 a.m. in the Humble High School Commons with a special surprise guest speaker. Veterans Day Documentary See how flight after flight of war-bound and returning GIs are met by a determined band of patriotic senior citizens with “The Way We Get By,” a documentary that tells the stories behind the famous “Troop Greeters” of Bangor, Maine. It will be a special presentation on PBS on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 9 p.m. Thanksgiving Luncheon and Veterans Recognition On Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 11:30 a.m., there will be a special Thanksgiving Luncheon and Veterans Recognition at the Crosby Community Center. Join the special tribute to veterans and reflect on this great country, individual blessings, and the sacrifices of many. There will be a guest speaker, Medal of Honor recipient, David McNerney, who will tell his tales of heroism and valor that has earned him this special honor. The lunch menu includes a traditional turkey and dressing lunch complete with all the trimmings. Advanced registration and a payment of $8 is required. Space is limited to the first 120 people, so stop by the Center no later than Friday, Nov. 6, to sign up. Anthony’s Veterans Day Rally Home for Our Troops is hosting the Have a Heart Home Run on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. It is a motorcycle/car race to raise money for Petty Officer Thompson, who was seriously injured in his second deployment to Iraq, when a bomb detonated. Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, all Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants will honor veterans and active duty military with a free meal. All guests with proof of current or former U.S. military service will enjoy a free entrée from a selection of six signature favorites.
