Department stores give free products to consumers Customers stood in line at Dillard’s in Deerbrook Mall Jan. 20 to receive a free cosmetic product from famous name-brand manufacturers. Each person was asked to choose one item from a list of products ranging from Estée Lauder night renewal cream to Ralph Lauren Romance bath and shower gel. The cosmetic products were distributed at stores owned by Federated Department Stores Inc. as part of a class action lawsuit. Anyone was eligible to receive a free product from one of the major department stores from which they purchased cosmetics during the class period May 29, 1994 through July 16, 2003. Each person waiting in line was asked to sign their name stating they received one free item from the list. Products bearing names like Boucheron, Chanel, Christian Dior, Estée Lauder and Lancôme were distributed free for a maximum of seven days on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning Jan. 20, while supplies lasted. When quantities of specific items were depleted, they were marked off the list of consumer choices. As part of the class action settlement, major department stores including Dillard’s, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue distributed $175 million worth of free cosmetics products to qualified members of the class action settlement.
