Never an ordinary cake

The only limitation is imagination for Chef Terry Kelly. “Theme cakes and wedding cakes are my specialty,” she said. Kelly has an album of photographs showcasing the wide range of imaginative cakes she has made. There are cakes shaped like handbags, trucks, Clifford the Big Red Dog, fairy castles, a volcano, a skateboard park, a Hawaiian shirt and beautiful wedding cakes. “The weirdest cake I ever made was for a man whose wife was graduating from forensic school. He ordered a cake shaped like a human skull. Another unusual request was a birthday cake for a woman whose husband was a mountain climber. She ordered a three-dimensional cake of his favorite mountain,” Kelly said. Kelly has not been a professional baker all her life. After her children were grown, she decided to complete her college education and attend culinary school at San Jacinto College North. “After graduating from San Jacinto, I stayed on with my mentor for another four years getting fine tuned,” she said. “Then it was time to hit the real world.” Kelly worked several years as a line cook and banquet coordinator for Hasta La Pasta before venturing out in her own business. “Hasta La Pasta was very good to me and encouraged me in every direction,” Kelly said. Kelly, whose blue eyes sparkle when assisting a customer, understands the key to her business is customer service. “I want my customers to be happy when they walk out of here. The customer usually has all the artwork I need. It is my job to show the customer what we can do, keep it practical and at the same time consider the expense,” she said. Annie Murray came into Tasty Temptations to get a Batman cake made for her son and remarked that she wished she had known about this store earlier. Leann Carrasco’s daughter had a birthday party at Jumpin’ Joey’s when she discovered Tasty Temptations. “Homemade cakes taste so much better than store bought,” she said. Kelly had no experience in running a business when she started Tasty Temptations almost two years ago. “It has been a roller coaster ride, but lots of fun, and I am doing something I love,” she said. Tasty Temptations is located at 5340 FM 1960 (southwest corner of FM 1960 and Timber Forest Drive). To order, call 281-852-CAKE. Photo: Chef Terry Kelly shows off one of her beautiful cakes.
