The ninth annual Travis McCormick Kleenwood Day was a great success as Kingwood residents volunteered to don their gloves and grab plastic garbage bags to gather and discard debris in the Kingwood vicinity. Nearly 1,000 volunteers participated in the yearly event, put on by the Kingwood Chamber of Commerce (KCC). The event was sponsored by Regent Care. This year’s event was held Saturday, Jan. 28. Groups gathered at neighborhood pools around the community and were then escorted by team captains to their appointed rounds. After the teams finished picking up debris, volunteers were invited to gather at Town Center Park, where they were able to relax, have fun and enjoy hotdogs and sodas, provided by Café DuBois and H-E-B. Amanda Cruz and Sparky Nolan, representing KCC, emceed the event and various groups and businesses in the community supported and donated to the event. Several area merchants aided in the success. “We couldn’t do this every year,” Nolan said, “without the help of so many.” Nolan gave thanks to Kingwood Association Management, Kingwood Girl Scouts, Kingwood Kiwanis Key Club members, the University of Houston, Kingwood Montessori, Keep Kingwood Green Association, the City of Houston and the Exxon Retirees Association. With help from Best Buy, monetary awards were given to the group who provided the most volunteers. Two $1,000 awards went to the Kingwood Girl Scouts and the Kingwood Key Club. Travis McCormick, for whom the event was named, was a longtime area resident who was dedicated to making sure the community was clean and wanted to organize a clean-up day for the Kingwood community. Unfortunately, he passed away before the first Kleenwood event, so the event has borne his name for the past nine years. Each year the Kingwood Chamber’s Kleenwood Day is held the Saturday before Super Bowl weekend. Everyone that cares about Kingwood and its beauty is invited to share the fun and festivities.
