Students cheered and hoisted “stomp the Cougars” signs, ROTC members yelled and marched in unison, cheerleaders lined the ladder of a fire truck and Batman made an appearance. Humble High School students celebrated a rescheduled week of homecoming activities with a Nov. 5 parade. The event featured floats packed with spirit-filled students, the drill team, marching band and members of the football team, who squared off with the Nimitz High School Cougars in Friday night’s homecoming game. The float themes ranged from school promotion to “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Batman: The Dark Knight.” Michelle Funderburk, a volleyball and softball coach at the high school, brought her two-year-old son Jaden to the festivities. She said she has attended the parade each of the last four years. “I just always bring my kids to see it,” she said. “It’s a tradition. I get to see all the kids that I teach and show them Humble spirit. I get to see them have fun outside of a classroom setting.” She said she enjoyed the ROTC presentation most. Sean Miller, a senior at the high school and an ROTC cadet staff sergeant, said the unit began preparing for the parade a few weeks ago. Days before the parade, organization members decided who would carry each flag and did last minute work, he said. “By Monday and Tuesday, we were ready to get it over with,” he said. “It’s just a quick walk to let everyone see what we are and what we do.” The week of homecoming activities is fun because students display a love for their school and classmates, Miller said. “In the parade, I like to hear the battalion sound off,” he said. “Did you hear them yelling down Main Street? It speaks for itself.” Photo: Michelle Funderburk, a volleyball and softball coach at Humble High School, holds up two-year-old son Jaden at the Humble High School homecoming parade Nov. 5.
