Volunteer sign-up planned for Sept. 23 The 2009 Humble High School Project Graduation committee held its second meeting Sept. 8. The purpose of the meeting was to obtain approval and get the go-ahead from HHS principal Charles Ned to proceed with plans to recruit parents of the 2009 senior class, junior class parents and community members to get involved the project. At the present time, the Project Graduation committee is made up of community volunteers Vernon Reed, Lisa Maddux and Vera Eisterhold; Cheryl Burnett, president of the Humble ISD Council of PTA’s; and Marilyn Mann, Kingwood Middle School PTA president and chairman of Student Services Committee for PTA Council. Representing HHS and the PTSA is Nancy Cozad. Dan Huberty will represent the Humble ISD Board of Trustees. During the meeting, Reed told the group that Huberty (not present) has pledged $250 in support. He said the Humble ISD Education Foundation has also promised to lend support. “We have about 75 parents who have expressed an interest in Project Graduation. Letters are going home to them later this week seeking their involvement,” said Cozad. The invitation is also extended to businesses and community members throughout the Humble area who want to be involved in efforts to give HHS seniors a safe and fun place to go on the night of graduation. Details regarding the set number of hours for the ‘lock-in’ celebration will be worked out as information is received regarding the schedule for the 2009 HHS commencement ceremony. The committee first met in July to discuss a proposed plan to help HHS prepare for Project Graduation for the 2009 senior class. In 2008, HHS seniors were given a Project Graduation ‘Luau’ immediately following finals instead of a traditional over-night event. “We do have concerns – we don’t want a repeat of last year. It’s important to work across boundaries on this project in order to give our students what they deserve, and we're all for that” said Ned. Ned told the committee that the need for the community support for this event is great and he would like the committee to meet once a month. Ned told the group that HHS will have approximately 450-500 graduating senior this year. He noted that any fundraisers would have to be accountable and that security for the event would be tight. The HHS PTSA has $3,000 in the bank to begin the project. Suggestions for fundraisers included a BBQ using Humble ISD resources with other options to be determined by a fundraising committee, which will be formed later. The possibility of getting T-shirts donated to be worn at the event by all students and efforts to secure donated prizes were also discussed. Those attending the meeting agreed they would start by volunteering to chair working committees necessary to get HHS Project Graduation organized. The committees that are in place at this time are: Security, chaired by Maddux; theme and decorations, chaired by Burnett; music, entertainment, food and games, chaired by Mann. Cozad is the designated HHS parent liaison and will keep HHS updated. Reed agreed to be the interim HHS Project Graduation committee chair. They are hoping that a senior parent will step up and assume this position. A meeting will be held on Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the HHS cafeteria where parents and community volunteers will be welcomed and given the opportunity to get involved. Volunteers are needed to work on all committees and be involved in making plans for the big event. A theme for the event is to be determined at this meeting. All members of the community are invited and encouraged to invite someone to come with them. Future meetings will be held Oct. 21 at 7 p.m., and Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. The location for all meetings will be in the HHS cafeteria. No meeting date is scheduled for the month of December, but meetings will will resume in January. Weekly meetings will be necessary as the date of graduation approaches.
