A message to my friends, supporters, and residents of Houston City Council District E It's hard to believe that I have been your District E Council Member for almost 9 months. Sworn in on January 2, 2008, I have been busy ever since. The first order of business was to build my City Council Team. I knew the success of my term would hinge on the services we provide our constituents. Many Council Members call their employees "staff", or "employees". I call mine "Team Members", because we have a true team attitude and spirit in our office. We all help each other and we all learn from each other. We are there to serve the residents of District E, and that is our highest priority, day in and day out. It doesn't matter if it's working on the timing of traffic signals, following up on basis city services, or looking ahead to bring important capital projects to the District, we do it as a team. For a brief bio of every team member and their photos, please go to my City Council Web Page at http://www.houstontx.gov/council/e/index.html and click on "Meet the District E Team". While there, click on "Photo Galleries" to see some of the projects we've been working on for you. Here is a short synopsis of accomplishments we've achieved in our first 8 months of service to you. The list is not meant to be all inclusive, because there are just too many things to share with you. I can, however, point to the following: 1. Held town hall meetings in every sector of the District. 2. Donated over $15,000 of equipment to every Houston Fire Department station within my District. Even after these donations were made, I still returned over $5,000 of your tax money back to the general fund. 3. Have fought with the Houston Planning Commission to stop the construction of roads into Kingwood that would do nothing more than increase traffic on our already-congested streets and roads. 4. Assisted Humble ISD and residents of Kings Forest in reaching an agreement over construction problems at Kingwood High School. 5. Co-hosted 3 public meetings regarding the proposed land use regulations around our airports. 6. Welcomed President George W. Bush to Houston late in July, and was honored to have been one of five people to shake his hand as he disembarked from Air Force One. 7. Conducted a traffic study on Kingwood Drive and Northpark Drive. 8. Worked with Harris County Flood Control District on flood projects in both the central and south sectors of the District. 9. Assisted contractors with the permitting process for the construction of the community fountain at the corner of Kingwood Drive and West Lake Houston Parkway. 10. Spent over 18 hours riding with Houston Fire Department supervisors in an effort to learn how the department serves Houstonians. 11. Assisted a small business owner with permitting for a new sign for their business on West Lake Houston Parkway. 12. Held a Stake Holders Meeting for Sylvan Rodriguez Park, gaining community input on what activities and services should be available at the 110 acre facility. 13. Welcomed back the Astronauts from STS-123, and STS-124, at Ellington Field. 14. Rode with Solid Waste trucks in the Clear Lake area, street sweepers in Kingwood, and Heavy Trash trucks in the Forest Cove community. 15. Participated as Grand Marshall of the July 4th parade in Kingwood. 16. Am currently working with Mayor Bill White on major projects that impact our water quality, air quality, and am even involved in a project to increase the number of trees in our communities throughout Houston. 17. Working with Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership on major projects that both retain and attract new businesses to the Clear Lake area. 18. Am working to bring recycling to the Kingwood Park N Ride lot every weekend, and have secured funding to build a recycling center next door the Park N Ride in 2011. 19. Have spoken to numerous civic clubs, Super Neighborhood Councils, and other community groups and listened to their concerns and issues. 20. Have secured funding for the construction of a new library in Kingwood, a new community center in Kingwood, and expansion of Northpark Drive. 21. Worked with Mayor White to appoint 5 new Directors to the Lake Houston TIRZ (Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone) Board. The new Directors are Mike Byers, II, Ed Dormer, Collin Rose, Stan Sarman, and one yet-to-be approved Director who will be sworn in before the end of this calendar year. 22. Toured Bush, Hobby, and Ellington Fields, as well as the Joint Armed Services Training Facility at Ellington Field, the US Coast Guard base at Ellington, the NASA Operations Complex at Ellington, and the 147th at Ellington. 23. Have committed to serve on the University of Houston-Clear Lake District Advisory Committee, working directly with Dr. Bill Staples on issues affecting their campus and supporting institutions. 24. Improved the Ellington Field Recycling Center, by patching holes in the pavement, increasing the height of the fence to keep debris from blowing out, and putting "slats" in the fence to provide a visual screen to the roll off bins for recyclables. The activities and projects listed above are but just a peek at the activities we have undertaken for you. Besides those listed, we continue to support and work with our Chambers of Commerce, Rotary/Kiwanis/Lions clubs, school districts, and other community service associations. I am also proud to say that I have not missed a single City Council meeting, and am diligent in attending my City Council Committee meetings as well. For those of you who do not know, we meet every Tuesday afternoon, from 1:30 – 5:00 PM, and every Wednesday from 9:00 AM until the end of our business, which is usually about 12:00 – 1:30 PM. Please let me know your thoughts on issues as they relate to my City Council District, or with the City of Houston. I am in office to serve you, and wake up every single morning making sure that I do just that. Thank you for the chance to be your District E Council Member.
