It is time to pull out the exercise mats and begin working on crunches in preparation for what Humble Army recruiters hope will become an annual community-fitness event, the Humble Army Fitness Challenge. Some of the components of the event will be designed for fun, while others will be highly competitive. Visitors are invited to come and run, walk or cheer. “We did some brainstorming about a month and a half ago,” said Station Commander Michael Harrington. “Plans are beginning to take shape. This event will help community members focus on fitness and it will help them see what a soldier has to do to pass his or her annual physical.” Harrington said that the fitness challenge is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, between 9 a.m. and noon. The station he commands is on FM 1960 in Humble, but the event he is organizing will be held in the parking lot behind The Humble Civic Center. “We will offer an Army Rock Wall Challenge, an Army H-3 Hummer and other items of interest to people of all ages,” said Harrington. “We have been talking to the athletic directors at all the area high schools. They are showing their support of the event, which is free to the public.” The Army fitness test will include two minutes of push-ups, two minutes of sit-ups and a timed, two-mile run. Contestants will be divided by gender and age. Winners will be chosen for the various events and categories. At the end of the competition, an Iron Man and Iron Woman will be named, who did well in all three challenges. “This event will be held the first week of spring break and it will provide a healthy alternative to the usual spring break activities,” said Harrington. “We will provide snacks and refreshments, on the house, so RSVPs are requested to help with planning, but not required.” Harrington said that the recruiters are still looking for sponsors of the event who will help with fitness prizes and the promotion of healthy activities.
