The 16th annual Bridge Fest on Saturday, Feb. 2, celebrates the opening of the Lake Houston Parkway Bridge, which links the communities of Kingwood, Atascocita and Humble. What better way to commemorate this day than to participate in a 5K (3.1 mile) race for all ages? The YMCA calls runners, joggers and walkers alike to sign up for the races, which will start and finish at the Lake Houston Family YMCA, located at 2420 W. Lake Houston Parkway. The races begin with a half-mile Kid’s Race at 8 a.m., followed by the one-mile Kid’s Races at 8:20 and 8:40 a.m., and finally the Bridge Fest 5K Family Fun Run and Walk at 9 a.m. Late registrations will continue up to 15 minutes before the start of each race event. “Bridge Fest is a fun, family activity that supports our community,” says Marketing Director Carol Sutton, who has coordinated the event for 14 years. Proceeds from the race entry fees will benefit the Lake Houston Family YMCA Partners Campaign, which uses contributions to make child care and youth programs available for anyone, regardless of their ability to pay. The planning committee has done an outstanding job planning this event, says Sutton. “We’re looking forward to another successful event this year.” Be sure to load up on carbs for energy on Feb. 1 at the first annual Spaghetti Dinner from 5-8 p.m., donated by Italiano’s Restaurant and Texas Roadhouse. The price is $3 per person for this advanced registration event, and sign up is at the YMCA. An awards ceremony at 10 a.m. will conclude Bridge Fest. Winners of the Kid’s Race will receive a trophy, those in the 5K run get medals, and 2 overall men and women get a trophy. Each child that participates in the Kid’s Race will receive a medal.
