On the heels of a successful KPark Annual Fund it introduced last school year, Kingwood Park High School has launched the 2013-2014 KPark Annual Fund and is inviting parents, businesses and community members to participate. The KPark Annual Fund was established as a project of the Humble Education Foundation to raise funds and provide additional resources to increase student achievement at Kingwood Park. Last year, the school raised $75,000 and purchased 60 iPads (two carts with 30 iPads per cart); lab equipment and technology for math and science classes; and to send teachers to specialized instructional training at Rice University. Kingwood Park is hoping to generate $50,000 in funds this year to buy an additional 30 iPads; send more instructors to professional development; and fund the upcoming 2013 Day of Service scheduled for Oct.7. “I’m excited about the training I received at Rice University, especially how it allows me to incorporate new information and ideas into all my classes,” said Lori Lero, U.S. History Team leader at Kingwood Park. “This training is invaluable because it strengthens the overall education of our students at KPark.”Kingwood Park Day of Service has become an annual event for freshman, resulting in approximately 400 students volunteering with various organizations. Students learn from working, caring, and making a difference, working with groups including the Village Learning Center, Habitat for Humanity, the Houston Food Bank, as well as several area nursing homes. Some students who participated in last year’s Day of Service noted feeling accomplished for making a difference in other people’s lives. Others proclaimed more personal benefits. “I felt at peace when I knew people who were in need would have food to eat,’ said Kingwood Park student Josiah Carroll, one of last year’s participants.
