Over 60 people turned out for Atascocita Middle School’s first “chat-n-chew” with the principal. It was held on Wednesday, Sept.16, at Double Dave’s in Atascocita. The purpose of the event is to share information with parents as well as listen to their feedback and concerns. There will be two meetings a month, one for dinner and one for breakfast, held at local eating establishments. Each month there will be a specific topic that will be covered. This month’s topic is communication and Principal Thyrun Hurst and Principal A+ Intern Karl Koehler handed out information on how parents can contact their children’s teachers and what tutoring times they will be available. “We really appreciated the parent and community support and their desire to partner with the school to make this meeting a huge success,” Principal Hurst said. Double Dave’s donated 10 percent of the proceeds back to AMS as well as giving patrons 10 percent off their bill. The next “chat-n-chew” is scheduled for Sept. 29 from 6 - 8 a.m. at Jitter’s Coffee, located at 18445 West Lake Houston Parkway. Another event that Principal Hurst would like to plan in the near future is “Community in the Classroom,” where local businesses work with teachers and develop a lesson plan geared towards students, to provide them with relevant day-to-day operation knowledge. AMS would also like to schedule a community service day in May 2010. The service day would be to thank the local community and neighbors by providing volunteers to perform low-skill, high-labor projects. Principal Hurst would also like to thank the anonymous donor who had over $2000 of school and office supplies delivered to the school as well as making a $20,000 donation to the school for an electronic marquee that will be installed in the very near future.
