The 2009 Humble High School Project Graduation committee met in December to continue planning and working on a project that is intended to give all HHS seniors a safe haven on the night of graduation. Class president Katie Brown gave a report on fundraising efforts by the students, which are ongoing throughout the year. Committee chair Donna Tucker could not hide her disappointment with the low turnout of volunteers and officers, and said she hoped it was due to the hectic schedules everyone has during this time of year. Approximately 20 volunteers were present – senior students represented half of that number. Tucker told the group there is a great need for volunteers if they are to pay for entertainment, food, decorations and prizes. She stressed that volunteers are needed for all committees – decorating, food, publicity, entertainment and security. The fundraising committee volunteers will have the challenge of soliciting donations of food, prizes, entertainment and sponsors. Sponsors will be recognized on the Project Graduation T-shirts. The T-shirts will be sold for $10 to seniors to wear the night of Project Graduation as their ticket in the door. Bids for the T-shirts will be requested. On Jan. 6, a Lawler’s cheesecake fundraiser will kick off. Tucker said this is a good fundraiser which gives back a high return on the sale of the items. Several flavors will be available for pre-orders. Vicki VanGordan, treasurer of the group, gave an update the budget for this year’s event. She said the bank balance at this time is $2,994 plus a $250 donation by Dan Huberty, vice president of the Humble ISD board of trustees. Myrthala Guzman is the decorating committee chairman. She reported the storage facility, which contained HHS decorations from previous events, has been cleaned out and organized. She said they found most items could be refurbished and reused.
