Cutline: Cindy Holders pickles leave no sour faces. Cindy Holder, the small business owner of Happy Happy Pickles, satisfies taste buds one pickle at a time. Holder sells delicious pickles in the community and at local festivals. A fellow teacher that had received a jar as a gift suggested I do a festival at her church, said Holder. Then Caroline Daley invited me to be a part of a fundraiser for her daughter here in the community called Help Lauren Learn that same fall. Holder got her delicious recipe from her family. I received the recipe from a family member about 30 years ago and made them as gifts for years, said Holder. She decided to open a business about five years ago and has been pleased ever since. The business name Happy Happy Pickles came from a student she taught. I teach kids with autism that have extremely limited verbal language skills. I told my aide I was leaving the room and would be back in just a few minutes. Upon returning to class, one of my students exclaimed, Happy, happy pickles! Since her language was typically one-word utterances making requests or singing songs from television shows, we were stunned. A couple of weeks later the same thing happened again. So, I decided that had to be their name, said Holder. During festivals each fall, Holder sells her product and throughout the year she sells by word-of-mouth and returning customers. The pickles sold at Happy Happy Pickles are sweet/hot pickles that are very thin sliced, crunchy sweet with a kick of heat and a hint of garlic, Holder explains. I have so many customers who state they are just purely addicted to them, said Holder. When people see me at shows they get so excited, it is just pure fun. No one knows my name, I am just The Pickle Lady, said Holder. My oldest son took a jar of my pickles on a picnic date. His new bride loved them so much she teasingly told me later that was part of the reason she married him was to have my pickles always, said Holder. We ended up making 300, half-pint jars of them for favors at their wedding.
