Cutline: Sharon Lewis, center, surrounded by her team. “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” The agency is celebrating a milestone: 35 years in business. That certainly is something to celebrate, considering online competitors like travelocity.com have made brick-and-mortar agencies almost a thing of the past. Almost being the key phrase here. Despite the hyper-digital age Kingwood Travel is still around (and has a digital presence to boot.) The owner, Sharon Lewis, says she has the ticket to success: “We pride ourselves in excellent service, delivering brochures, videos and travel shows quarterly at the [Kingwood] Country Club,” said Lewis. It also doesn’t hurt that Kingwood Travel is affiliated with Signature Travel Network, a $3.5 billion co-op of retail travel agencies. Lewis said that the membership “provides us with destination specialists and larger buying power with the vendors. We are able to offer upgrades, shipboard credit and many amenities.” “We chartered an entire AmaWaterways Cruise ship this last June for Exxon retirees and they had a wonderful time,” said Lewis. Over three decades of success to her name isn’t by sheer luck. Prior to opening up the agency, Lewis was already in the travel industry and saw an opportunity in Kingwood. “Previous to Kingwood Travel, my background was airline employed as flight attendant, ticket and reservations agent and President Club representative,” said Lewis. “So, it was natural to open a travel agency and Kingwood did not have one.” Throughout her career with Kingwood Travel, Lewis has seen the world. “China, Antarctica and, of course, Africa are among my favorites,” said Lewis. “Also, [I] love Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, as the people are so gentle.” thirty-five years strong, and Lewis doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. “Traveling is such an education, and it seems I am insatiable when it comes to travel,” said Lewis. “In November, we plan to river cruise from Prague to and also take in the Christmas Markets in Vienna.” For more information, call Kingwood Travel at 281-358-KING or visit kingwoodtravel.net.
