How Sweet It Is: Shipleys Do-Nuts recipe for success

Many believe that everything in life boils down to timing. Shipleys Do-Nuts off Northpark and Loop 494 in Kingwood is no stranger to that concept. This sweet shop isn’t just open for business; it’s open for business at 4:22 a.m. on the dot. “When you come across the Super Bowl or the NBA Finals, there’s a lot of research behind the time so that people remember the special time of the event,” said Ngy Chang, manager. Using that same logic, Chang decided to start each work day at 4:22 a.m. It’s all part of his recipe for success. “I like to copy the route and direction of successful people,” Chang said. It looks like he’s on the right track. This Shipleys Do-Nuts has called their corner of Kingwood home for more than 10 years. Shipleys Do-Nuts, arguably one of the best donut franchises, has been around for 76 years. More than 250 stores can be found in what’s called the “Donut Belt”: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee. The Shipley’s chain originated in Houston in the 1940s. The Donut Belt doesn’t sound like a flattering name, especially in a time where people are swapping sweets for salads. But is doesn’t mean dieters have to ditch Shipleys all together. Chang says the store offers oven-baked kolaches. It’s obviously not the same as eating a salad, but it’s arguably a dietary step in the right direction. It goes without saying that donuts are still number one at Shipleys. “Glazed is our hottest product, and a lot of chocolate iced. Those are the two favorite among consumers,” said Chang. As for his favorite? “My favorite donut is a glazed donut, when they first come out and they’re hot,” Chang added. There’s one key ingredient Chang says is vital. “Without the customers coming in on a regular basis, we wouldn’t be in business,” said Chang. “We sincerely thank the community. We always appreciate the community support.” These sweet treats can be found at 1317 Northpark Dr., Suite 104, Kingwood.
