Texans can purchase certain items tax free during the state’s sales tax holiday for emergency preparation supplies, April 22-24. There’s no limit on the number of qualifying items you can purchase. These include: batteries, fuel containers and flashlights priced at less than $75; hurricane shutters and emergency ladders priced at less than $300; smoke detectors; first aid kits; mobile telephone batteries and mobile telephone chargers; and portable generators priced at less than $3,000. Purchases that do not qualify include: batteries for automobiles, boats and other motorized vehicles; camping stoves and camping supplies; chain saws; plywood; extension ladders and stepladders; and tents. Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar Ann Harris Bennett said recently that the voter registration division of the Harris County Tax Office has trained and appointed over 1,000 volunteer deputy voter registrars in 2017 as of March 14. Also known as VDVRs, these volunteers assist the voter registrar in helping citizens of Harris County register to vote in upcoming elections.“Our VDVRs are the backbone of voter outreach and engagement,” said Bennett. “We have trained nearly double the number of VDVRs in 2017 so far than at this time in years past. “

A new Home Depot store in Summerwood opened April 6 near the intersection of West Lake Houston Parkway and Beltway 8. The Home Depot is the largest home improvement retailer in the world with more than 2,200 stores internationally. 



Main Event will open its new Humble location May 2. The 50,000-square-foot facility will offer 22 bowling lanes, two laser tag floors and a restaurant. Other activities will include a pool, dozens of video games and gravity ropes. 



Orion Engineered Carbons has renewed the lease for office space at Kings Harbor. A new tenant, Comfort & Care Medical Supplies, Inc., has signed a lease, a Kings Harbor spokesperson said. Orion, a carbon black company, occupies 19,390 square feet and is a producer of high-quality carbon blacks, focusing on collaborative partnerships with customers in rubber and pigment applications. Comfort & Care Medical Supplies, Inc. occupies 1,835 square feet of second-level office space.
