KMC's CEO Melinda Stephenson presents the 3rd Quarter Shining Star Award to R.N. Serina Hebert of the intensive care unit.

Kingwood Medical Center (KMC) recently honored Serina Hebert, R.N. of the intensive care unit (ICU), as the 3rd Quarter Shining Star – for shining like a star, inspiring others and contributing to the success of KMC. The award is part of KMC's Shining Star program to recognize those employees who go beyond the call of duty every day.
Kevin Manning, KMC's chief nursing officer, said, “Serina has worked at Kingwood Medical Center for 10 years. She started as a staff nurse and is now a charge nurse in the ICU, and is a great example of our shining star. She has the respect of the entire unit as well as our physicians. She is the go-to person when anyone wants to know anything! She is an enormous asset as one of our day shift charge nurses.”
On Sept. 19th, Hebert went above her typical nursing responsibilities when she refused to let a patient die in the ICU without trying to find his family. The patient had been in the unit for two days without any family visiting or calling, and none of the contact phone numbers were working. She contacted the city hall in the patient’s hometown and they sent a patrol officer to try to locate the family. Unfortunately, the home was padlocked and no one answered the phone or the door. The brother called to check on the patient and was informed that he was not doing well. He in turn called his sister with the same information. The family lives in Shepherd, Texas. Due to Hebert’s efforts, when the patient died he had two brothers, a sister-in-law, and a son and daughter-in-law at his bedside.
Hebert was so humbled by this honor, and said, “I just come to work and do the best I can every day to make sure that I take care of my patients, staff and doctors. I am so thankful for the blessing of working alongside my patients and the wonderful team of professionals at Kingwood Medical Center.”
