CenturyLink food drive benefits HAAM Humble Area Assistance Ministries collected over 17,536 pounds of food in the 2012 CenturyLink Feed the Children Backpack Buddies Food Drive, which took place June 25-29. The drive, which was held in approximately 650 CenturyLink locations around the country, collected 106,275 actual pounds of food and $271,900. It aims to help the 37 million Americans who receive food assistance annually. “Gifts like this are critical to our mission of feeding families in our area,” said Deborah Coppola, executive director of HAAM. “We’d like to thank CenturyLink employees, the CenturyLink Foundation, and all those in our community who participated in the CenturyLink Food Drive for their generosity and commitment to assisting those in need.” Healing Hands As part of a one-day donation event called Healing Hands, each of the 28 Massage Envy Houston locations will donate $10 from every massage booked on Sept. 19 to help the nearly one million Houstonians who suffer from arthritis. Fall 2012 begins Monday, Aug. 27 and students can register up to the first day of class. Credit classes offered for the fall include accounting, anthropology, arts, biology, business, business management, chemistry, communications, computers, cosmetology, criminal justice, dance, digital imaging, drama, economics, education, EMT, English, French, fire science, game design, geography, geology, German, government, history, humanities, interior design, Italian, kinesiology, marketing, math, medical terminology, music, philosophy, psychology, physics, sociology, Spanish, speech, and more. Most of those courses are also offered as second start classes. Second-start classes range from eight to 14 weeks in length. New tenants at Kings Harbor A clothing boutique called Pretty Little Things and a Mexican restaurant called Puerto are the two newest additions to the Kings Harbor Waterfront Village. Pretty Little Things is a new shop that occupies the 1,280 square feet of retail space next to the Berry Bar facing Jennika’s. Owned by a mother-daughter duo, the boutique features popular brands, children’s clothing, home décor and the latest trends in tops, eye wear, shoes, jewelry and gifts. Puerto, which is set to open by the end of August, will offer fresh Mexican cuisine in a casual and festive atmosphere. The restaurant will occupy 2,384 square feet of space next to Chimichurri’s and feature a variety of tacos and cervezas on its menu. Savings extravaganza can save shoppers money Just Between Friends, an organization that hosts shopping events around the country, is gearing up for its biannual Humble consignment sale from Sept. 13-15 at The Gym. Run by local mom Libra Thompson, the event helps save families 50 to 90 percent on thousands of items like children’s and maternity clothing, baby equipment, DVDs, toys and more. In addition, families can sell gently used items, earning between 60 and 70 percent on their sales. Admission is $2 on Sept. 13 and free on Sept. 14-15. Hours are as follows: Thursday, Sept. 13: 2 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14: 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Accessible Parking Enforcement Program wants volunteers The City of Houston Parking Management and Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities are looking for individuals to participate in the Accessible Parking Enforcement Program, which helps provide accessible parking to individuals with disabilities whose needs require additional parking spaces. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and will be required to attend a four-hour training session. Participants will receive a free lunch.
