Memorial Hermann makes plans for October fundraiser

Almost everyone has been affected by cancer in some way. According to the National Cancer Institute, “it is estimated that 226,870 women will be diagnosed with and 39,510 women will die of cancer of the breast in 2012.” Just about everyone feels terrible about statistics such as these, but few take action to change the outcome. The Host Committee for the Northeast Hospital’s Foundation met recently to make plans for their 5th Annual “In the Pink of Health” luncheon fundraiser. “You are part of an elite group … and I want each of you to know how much we appreciate what you’re doing for us and for the community,” said Foundation President Norman Funderburk. Businesses and residents of the area will also have an opportunity to help the cause, which raises funds for equipment and services to help with the fight against cancer. Funds this year will go toward the Memorial Hermann Cancer Center – Northeast, as well as ongoing programs supported by the Foundation. One such program is Project Mammogram, which helps uninsured and under-insured women still benefit from early detection. Lynn Whitehair, regional director of Memorial Hermann’s Cancer Service Line, said the Center is in need of a new scope, and that funds raised this year will also help with that. This year’s speaker will be author, motivational speaker and comedian, Diana Jordan. Jordan is also a breast cancer survivor. Corinn Price of Insperity is the luncheon honoree. The raffle has also changed to make it even better than in years past. “We’re planning a unique raffle this year,” said Rose Marie Hartley, chair of the raffle committee. “When you purchase a ticket you’ll be able to select the package you’re interested in. The more tickets you purchase the more packages you can select.” Tickets are $10 each or 12 for $100 and will be on sale through the Host Committee and the Foundation. One need not be present to win. The luncheon will be held Oct. 19 at the Houston Airport Marriott and tables as well as single tickets may be purchased by calling 281-540-7817. Individual tickets are $150 and tables range from $1,500 to $10,000. Registration will begin at 10:30 and the luncheon will conclude at 1:15. Melissa Wilson of Channel 26 News will emcee the event.
