Atascocita Fire Department Lt. Jared Snell recently lost his life in a head-on collision just miles from home.

Area firefighters were recently shaken by the news that they had lost one of their own. Atascocita Fire Department Lt. Jared Snell was on his way home when his Hummer struck an 18-wheeler head on on SH 105 near Tarkington. Investigators say he tried to pass another vehicle around 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, and was just miles from home when the crash happened. Many believe that since he knew the roadway, he may have dozed off after working a long shift. Hundreds of friends, family members and fellow firefighters from many departments paid their last respects Friday, Aug. 16, at a service at Grace Church on SH 105 in Cleveland. His casket was placed on a fire truck for his last ride to his final resting place.
