Tournament Recap - Jan 12-14

Brazos Valley Cup - Varsity

This past weekend, the Kingwood High School Lady Mustang Soccer Team participated in the Brazos Valley Cup hosted by Bryan ISD. It was a beautiful weekend for soccer and was very productive for the Lady Mustangs.

Game 1 - Cy Springs (Win 5-1): The game started off with a bang with sophomore Colleen Feagins scoring just 5 minutes into the game (assisted by sophomore Cat Childs). Just four minutes later, freshman Emma Ebert scored a great goal assisted by junior Fiona Zimmerman. Ten minutes later (20th minute), Fiona took a corner kick that senior Cora Barker headed past the keeper, bringing the score to 3-0.

Nine minutes into the second half, Cy Springs would score their only goal on a long free kick that sailed over the head of senior goalkeeper Brianna Wallerich. In the 15th minute, however, the Lady Mustangs responded with senior Hannah Bodron scoring an unassisted goal that would take the score to 4-1. Two minutes later, Emma Ebert scored the 5th and final goal of the game from a pass from Colleen Feagins. The game would end 5-1.

Game 2 - Pflugerville (Win 5-3): This game was also dominated early by the Lady Mustangs. Just five minutes into the game, Colleen Feagins received a pass from senior Nikki Brown and smashed it past the goalkeeper. Fifteen minutes later, Colleen beat a defender on the dribble and played a ball to Fiona Zimmerman who one-touched it into the net. Right before the first half ended, senior Amanda Poppell took a free kick just outside the box and sent it into the back of the goal, thus bringing the score to 3-0.

The second half was a scoring battle between the two teams. Five minutes into the half, junior Rachel Guilfoyle crossed a ball to Fiona Zimmerman who touched it past the keeper. Five more minutes later, Amanda Poppell played a ball through the Pflugerville defense that Colleen Feagins picked up, beat two defenders on the dribble, and scored the team's 5th goal. However, between the 25th and 30th minute of the second half, the Pflugerville team would score 3 unanswered goals to make the game a little more interesting. It was too little too late though as the game would eventually end 5-3.

Game 3 - Clear Lake (Loss 1-0): The first game Saturday morning was dominated by the Lady Mustang offense, but the stars were not aligned correctly to allow a goal. The team managed to out-shoot the Clear Lake team by a margin of 18 to 4. However, the Clear Lake goalkeeper made some fantastic saves and managed to keep the game tied at 0-0. Then, with only 15 minutes left in the game, Clear Lake earned a free kick thirty yards from the Lady Mustang goal. As soon as the kick was taken, a Clear Lake attacker ran onto it and one-touched into the goal, giving Clear Lake a 1-0 lead. The last 15 minutes was a whirlwind of Lady Mustang offense with many shots being taken and possession being almost 100%. But, in the end, the game would end in a very close 1-0 loss. This loss would force the Lady Mustangs to play in the 3rd/4th Place game later that afternoon.

Game 4 - Friendswood (Win 4-2): After a short break, the Lady Mustangs would take on the Friendswood Mustangs in the 3rd/4th place game at the A&M Women's Soccer Field (Ellis Field). Only three minutes after the initial kickoff, Colleen Feagins played a ball into the box to senior Nikki Brown who buried it in the back of the net. The next 25 minutes would be spent mainly in the middle of the field with both teams keeping possession evenly. Then, in the 29th minute, one of the Friendswood forwards sped past the Lady Mustang defense and scored a one-on-one goal with goalkeeper Brianna Wallerich. However, 2 minutes later, the Lady Mustangs would answer swiftly with a goal by senior Hannah Bodron (assisted by Fiona Zimmerman) bringing the lead back to 1. Two minutes before halftime, Friendswood would again get through the Lady Mustang defense and speed down the field to tie the game at 2-2. This would bring the half to an end.

In the tenth minute of the second half, Colleen Feagins was tackled in the Friendswood box setting up a penalty kick that Hannah Bodron would smash past the goalkeeper. For the rest of the game, Friendswood would be kept to only one shot on goal, while the Lady Mustangs would dominate the game and get another nine shots at goal. With 10 minutes left in the game, Hannah Bodron picked up the ball on the Lady Mustang half of the field and played a quick long ball past the Friendswood defense that Colleen Feagins ran onto. Colleen proceeded to dribble through two Friendswood defenders, cut the ball back in front of another and then slide the ball past the goalkeeper to bring the score to 4-2.

The Lady Mustangs are now currently 4-2-1 and will play Clear Lake again next Thursday in Clear Lake. After that re-match, the Lady Mustangs will wait one full week before taking on their first district opponent, Atascocita (Sat. Jan 28th)
