Welcome, everyone, to the Out and About – here to catch you up on what’s happening in the Lake Houston area!
Happy August, everyone! I see “Back to School” shopping is already beginning with “Back to School” sales for everything from electronics to dorm room essentials. I have to admit snickering at a giant Smart TV being advertised as a special at one of the sales.
Humble Area Assistance Ministries (HAAM) is collecting school supplies if you haven’t yet donated. Also needed are backpacks, clothing, lunch bags, toiletries and pretty much anything else one would need to start the school year off right. Sneakerdoodles, a program begun by The Tribune’s own Trilla Cook, aims to supply HAAM with enough new sneakers to provide every child from K-12 who needs a pair, so take advantage of one of the many BOGO shopping deals going on and drop off a pair (or two) at HAAM.
Congratulations to the 12 Humble ISD students chosen to represent their schools at the Lone Star Leadership Academy in one of three camps: Houston-Galveston, Dallas-Fort Worth or Austin-San Antonio. The program, hosted by the nonprofit organization Education in Action, aims to promote leadership in youth through Texas-based learning experiences. Attending the Austin-San Antonio camp are Anne Marie Sokol from Elm Grove Elementary and Le’Shawnice Jones from Humble Middle School. Off to the Dallas-Fort Worth camp are Tanner Smith from Willow Creek Elementary, Isaac Bivens and Logan Eckert from Riverwood Middle School, Bri and Brandon Botyos and Kaitlyn Sitton from Pine Forest Elementary, Bryce Hobbs and Carter Hankemeier from Lakeshore Elementary, Emilio Cedillo from Oaks Elementary, and Michael Acosta from Timbers Elementary. Enjoy your trip!
The Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce recently held their Salute to Healthcare Luncheon sponsored by Kingwood Medical Center and Independent Bank, presenting Dr. Brian Miller of Miller Family Dental the award for Healthcare Professional of the Year. Also recognized were the other two finalists: Mallory Wharton with Kingwood Medical Center and Roderic Johnson with Texas Children’s Hospital Specialty Care Kingwood. The 2017 Lake Houston Chamber of Commerce Nurse of the Year Award was presented to Marcia Callerman with Lone Star College-Kingwood who is also a recipient of the Texas Women’s University Parry Outstanding Master Student Award. Finalists for the distinction were Kingwood Medical Center’s Rosalie Conry and Anita Smith with Texas Children’s Hospital Eagle Springs Specialty Care. Congratulations to all!
Happy birthday to another Tribune columnist and all around classy lady, Diane Blanco! Hope it was a great one! By the way, if you’re looking for a fun group activity while ushering in the holiday season with some timely shopping, Diane is hosting another fun group on a river cruise exploring the Christmas markets on the Danube. If you’ve never been to an authentic Weihnachtsmarkt, you’re in for a treat! I used to so look forward to the opening of these markets for the season and would spend hours walking around, munching on roasted chestnuts and sipping coffee or gluhwein. The tour will explore the fabulous markets in Vienna, Prague, Linz, Budapest, Melk, Passau, Regensburg and Nuremberg, so put your most comfy walking shoes on.
Another happy, happy birthday greeting to Bernie Remmes seen having celebratory appetizers at Amedeo’s with his lovely wife, Gina!

Before you go …
… we’ve got a small favor to ask. More people are reading The Tribune than ever. Advertising revenues across the media spectrum are falling fast. And unlike many news organizations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The Tribune's independent, investigative journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too. If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps to support it, our future would be much more secure. Support the only locally owned, locally produced news product in the Lake Houston area. And thank you!
