An East Montgomery County resident recently surprised the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office with an extraordinarily generous show of support. Porter was a black Labrador retriever trained in narcotics detection that joined the agency in April 2010, when he was 3 years old. Porter was assigned to Deputy Juan Chapa. They immediately began working drug interdiction and were very successful. Porter lived with Chapa’s family, which includes a wife and young son, and he was soon regarded as a fourth family member as well as a partner. Porter always seemed underweight, regardless of his diet, but otherwise appeared healthy. That is, until one day in March when Chapa returned to his patrol vehicle and could see Porter had fallen ill. He rushed the dog to the emergency room, and although he improved briefly, two days later, Porter died. The veterinarian said it appeared Porter had some kind of infection. Chapa and his family were devastated by the loss, as were other members of the Constable’s Office. Not only was Porter an excellent tool in the battle against illegal drugs, he was also a loving and gentle dog with an outgoing personality, they said. Dean Borden, president of Champion Retail Services, Inc. of Humble, and Roman Forest resident, heard this sad story and was inspired to make a donation to the Constable’s Office. “When I heard one of the dogs died, I wanted to help the constable out and get another dog,” Borden said. Constable Kenneth “Rowdy” Hayden said the $8,000 donation came as a huge surprise. “We’ve received a lot of positive feedback about our narcotics enforcement, but Mr. Borden took it to a whole new level and we are extremely grateful,” Hayden said. Ultimately, they found Dino, an 18-month-old Belgian Malinois, now trained in narcotics detection. Dino was recently put in service and already made his first drug bust, giving a positive odor alert that resulted in three felony arrests.
