The 2017 Texas high school football season is still approximately two months away, but predictions for the upcoming season are rolling in.
That includes the much-anticipated 2017 Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, which previewed all high school teams in the state.
Four of the area teams are projected to make the playoffs in their respective conferences; Atascocita, Kingwood, Summer Creek and Huffman Hargrave.
The Atascocita Eagles had the run of a lifetime in 2016, making the state playoffs for the first time in school history before falling to eventual state champion Lake Travis.
This year, however, although the Eagles are projected second in 21-6A, the Eagles will be significantly younger; they return just eight starters.
However, the Eagles return star offensive lineman Kenyon Green, and running back DeCarlos Demmerritte, who ran for over 1000 yards in 2016. On defense, the secondary could be a team strength with Daryion Taylor, Travian Blalock and Alex Morris returning.
Also projected in the playoffs from 21-6A are the Kingwood Mustangs, led by Barry Campbell; they return 14 starters, including two way player Nolan Powell, Matt Bailey and Trey Batsell on defense.
On offense, offensive lineman Chris Elam will anchor a line that hopes to elevate players such as returning running back Casey Roth. The Mustangs are projected third, behind North Shore and Atascocita.
The Summer Creek Bulldogs are also projected to make the playoffs from 21-6A; they are pegged fourth in district. The Bulldogs return 10 starters, seven on offense, led by quarterback John Holcombe.
In District 10-4A D1, meanwhile, the Huffman Hargrave Falcons are a projected playoff team; Hargrave, led by Mike McEachern, is coming off a 4-6 season and returns 12 starters.
Camron McMahan and Brody Logsdon will play huge roles in the offense, while linebacker David King will be big defensively.
In 21-5A, neither the Humble Wildcats nor the Kingwood Park Panthers are playoff-predicted teams. Park, though, does return 18 starters, nine on both sides of the ball.
