Dr. Mash Ameri of Lake Shore Cosmetic Dentistry has a great smile. It’s featured on billboards and signs on FM 1960 and W. Lake Houston Parkway and was the subject of most of his friends' comments in his high school yearbook. His smile has also brought him more than one new client.
Ameri said a patient once came to his office and said, “My wife keeps seeing your billboard and telling me that she wants my smile to look like yours. So now I’m here.”
Ameri said they straightened the gentleman’s teeth and gave him veneers and now he can’t stop smiling.
Ameri and his team don’t just fix smiles. In addition to providing cosmetic dentistry, Lake Shore Dentistry also provides general dentistry services including cleanings and fillings, implants, same-day restorations, endodontics, periodontal work, laser cold sore removal and orthodontia. All of this is provided within the comforts of their contemporary office on Will Clayton Parkway, which feels more like a spa, and less like a dentist’s office.
The office was built in 2011 and was designed with the help of the Henry Schein Design Group. The office is upscale, with a large fish tank and leather seats in the waiting area.
“Everyone hates going to the dentist. We decided to build an office that reduces the fear factor. When you walk in, it doesn’t look like a dental office; it looks like a spa. I wanted to create a wow factor. Our [treatment] chairs give a massage, we have televisions in every room and we have floor to ceiling windows that look out on our beautiful garden and fountains,” said Ameri.
Ameri said the atmosphere of the office is equally important to him.
“People have a choice in dentists. If they choose to see us, we need to roll the red carpet out for them. From the day they walk in, we must treat our patients with kid gloves, because they can go anywhere and they have chosen us,” said Ameri.
Ameri began his career in dentistry following a timely emigration from Iran in 1978 at the age of 16.
“My brother, who was a student in the U.S. at that time, said to me, 'Hey, if you want to do something with your life, come to America.' While I was getting my paperwork ready to come to America, I heard about the demonstrations, but I had no idea the revolution was about to start. It happened two weeks after I left Iran,” said Ameri.
He finished his last years of high school at Mount Carmel High School in Houston, then moved on to the University of Houston, where he received a degree in biology.
“After college, I decided to pursue a dental career. I didn’t want to leave Houston, so I applied to UT Houston Dental School and I was accepted,” said Ameri.
After dental school, Ameri embarked on a one-year post-graduate residency dealing with medically compromised hospital based patients at UT Houston, through Memorial Hermann Hospital.
“A lot of dentists graduate and begin practicing general dentistry, but I wanted more experience dealing with compromised patients,” said Ameri. “In general, dentists focus on the head, neck and teeth, but the teeth affect other areas of the body. For example, the heart can be affected by gum disease. I wanted to become a whole and complete dentist, versus a drill and fill dentist.”
After completing his residency Ameri joined a dental practice, then became interested in dental implants and completed another 18 months of residency for implants with UT San Antonio. Later, Ameri ventured into cosmetic dentistry and completed numerous cosmetic dentistry courses at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI). Ameri has also completed invisalign training.
Ameri said he has worked on his skills and trained clinically to be able to provide all the services a patient needs under one roof.
“I have also invested in technology and equipment to provide the best service to our patients. I am proud of my work. If my patient moves to another area, I want their new dentist to look at their dental work and be impressed. My philosophy is to treat every patient like my own family member and that no matter what you do, do it right,” said Ameri.
