Amy Potter and her son Grahm both graduated from Lone Star College-Kingwood on the same day.

While graduations are known as a family affair, many celebrate just one graduate.

However, that was not the case for one Atascocita family. On May 13, Amy Potter and her son, Grahm, graduated from Lone Star College-Kingwood. Amy earned an associate of applied science degree. Grahm earned an associate of science degree, one day after he graduated from Quest Early College High School.

“I always knew when he was going to graduate from school, but I didn’t realize that we would finish together,” Amy said. “I did not want to overshadow his accomplishment. I wanted him to walk across the stage while I cheered from the stands, but he wanted me to join him.”

After crossing the stage, Amy waited at the bottom of the stairs to be the first to hug Grahm.

“He was my study buddy and he quizzed me before all of my tests. Graduating with him was a huge honor,” Amy said. “I wanted to show my children that if they worked hard enough, they can achieve anything.”

Amy graduated from LSC-Kingwood’s Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program. Her goal is to help patients restore their former independence or adapt and become independent in their new lives. Prior to becoming an OTA, she was a teacher for 10 years.

Through Grahm’s hard work and achievements, he earned a four-year scholarship to Texas A&M at Galveston. He plans to earn degrees in Mechanical and Maritime Engineering as well as a master’s degree.

Amy Potter, left, and Grahm, center, both graduated on the same day from LSC-Kingwood. Amy’s daughter Lauren, right, graduated in April with a nursing degree from UTMB at Galveston.

The mother and son are not the only graduates in their family. Amy’s daughter, Lauren, graduated with a degree in nursing from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in April.
