Kingwood fire destroys family's home

Friday, January 11, 2013

B.R. Kimbro

A late-night fire destroyed a Kingwood family's home last weekend in Greentree, according to the Houston Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 3200 block of Highland Laurels Drive near Oakwood Forest shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, and discovered a two-story home engulfed in flames.

According to HFD, the homeowners were asleep inside the residence as the fire began. At some point while the house was burning, the couple awoke to the smell of smoke and were able to escape. They ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911 but by the time first-responders arrived the home's rear roof had already partially collapsed, HFD reported.

By the time the fire was extinguished, flames had destroyed the second-floor attic and the house experienced extensive water damage, according to HFD Deputy Chief Roy Hamm.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by arson investigators.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
